Tower of Frozen Shadow
The Tower of the Frozen Shadow was intended to be a beachhead for Mayong Mistmoore's influence in Velious. Vampire acolytes, undead refugees of the Erudite Civil War, and abominations fill all seven floors. Each floor requires a key to access the next floor.
Warnings:
- Keys are not soulbound In the case of death, you will need to be Resurrected, have your corpse summoned, or have a player use their key in group to get you back to the floor you died on.
- Some creatures here (a ghostly scholar) are capable of charming your pets and using them against you.
After Mayong Mistmoore abandoned his former lover Tserrina Syl'Tor and warded it to prevent her escape, she has put a formidable curse upon the residents of the tower. Each day Tserrina slaves in her laboratory for a cure to her unique vampiric affliction, losing more of her mind as time passes.

Key Checklist
- 1st floor: No key required. Click in from Iceclad.
- 2nd floor key: Crystal Key - dropped by a large undead gnoll on the 1st floor
- 3rd floor key: Three Toothed Key - dropped by an angry librarian on the 2nd floor
- 4th floor key: Frosty key - dropped by an enraged shadow beast on the 3rd floor
- 5th floor key: Small rusty key - dropped by Cara Omica on the 4th floor
- 6th floor key: Bone finger key - dropped by an enraged relative on the 5th floor
- 7th floor key: Large metal key - dropped by VhalSera on the 6th floor. This key is also the only way to unlock the door outside the mirror room (aside from rogue or bard locking picking).
- 1st foor to 7th floor mirror room: Tserrina's Key - dropped by Tserrina Syl`Tor on the 7th floor -- Contrary to popular belief, Tserrina's Key does NOT grant master key access to all floors. However, once in the mirror room, you can instantly travel to any floor by using that floor's key on the mirrors, starting from the second mirror on the right. The mirror room's mirrors are self only, and unless every member is keyed to your target floor you will have to clear and click up as normal.
You will need the Large metal key from VhalSera to unlock the door leading out of the 7th floor mirror room.
Dangers
Tower of Frozen shadow is one of the most unique zones in the game. That is, when exploring each floor and working towards the next, there can be a random boss spawn off of any kill on that floor. Therefore, a seemingly near victory can turn into defeat if the keyholder spawns at the wrong time. Don't let that discourage you though, because the chance for a keyholder to spawn is quite low. It often takes multiple full floor clears to get it to spawn.
Aside from the keyholders, the tower boasts lots of undead mobs. Be prepared though because some mobs run at low health, which is not typical of undead mobs. Mob density is average for a dungeon, where it is common to get groups of 3 or 4 in a pull if you do not have a lull type spell. Traveling through from floor to floor, even after obtaining the necessary keys, can be quite a pain without invisibility to undead. Mobs will continue to chase you after you take a mirror to the next floor, and will almost certainly cause a train to come find and kill you.
Benefits
Because TOFS is a dungeon, experience is fairly good here. The zone is segregated fairly well by level, so you don't often run into higher level characters clearing the lower floors unless they haven't yet obtained their keys, or they are just traveling up quickly. The zone is friendly to those who excel at killing undead, such as paladins, and the level range covers everything from around level 30 (1st floor) to level 50+(floors 6 and 7). One could choose to level during that entire range here, but bring your own group if you can't solo effectively, as it is a fairly low population zone.
The location of TOFS is also beneficial. It sites fairly close to the druid portal, and vendors aren't too far away. It is one of the first places you come across when first arriving at velious, if you dare venture here. The loot progressively gets better as you move up in floors, with some fairly desirable loot not far up.
Guide by Level
The keys are needed to go between every level as you move higher and higher into the tower. None of the keys are soulbound, so be prepared with an evac in case you lose your keyholder. The keys are used by using the key on a mirror, which will teleport your group to the next level. There are also exit mirrors located on every floor that will teleport you to a place outside the tower if you need to leave. All the keys are no drop. There is no key needed to get from level 6A to 6B (which is why they're both called level 6). The mirrors do not count as zone lines, which means that when you pass through them, you retain the aggro of creatures you left behind. They will eventually find a way to reach you, and usually with a rather large group of friends to help them out. Do not flee by using the mirrors (unless you go outside).
1
The first level consists of a lot of shadowbone skeletons and shadow beasts, as well as a couple of Lesser Ice Shades. Their levels range from 26-31 (with the shades being at least 28).
The room straight ahead after you enter is VERY slippery. There is a large pit in the center which is easy to fall into as a result, although levitate will negate the effect. Two shadowbone await you in the pit, and the slipperiness also makes getting out challenging.
To get to the next level you need a key from a large undead gnoll. He can spawn after any of the shadowbones or undead gnolls anywhere on the level are killed, and appears immediately wherever the previous mob died. Occasionally killing a large undead gnoll will cause three shadowbones or shadow beasts to spawn.
There is a portal to the 7th level, which requires the key from that level to enter.
2
The second level (the "Library") appears to be a school filled with students and librarians. All of the creatures here appear like ghostly erudites, humans, and dwarves. Killing any ghost on the floor can spawn an angry librarian upon death, who holds the key to the third level. There is also a secret bookcase in the northwest corner which leads to a mirror that will take you outside. Monsters here in 30th-34th level. Virtually all of the creatures on this level are casters and will cast dispel at every opportunity. There is a trapped bookcase next to the entry, which can be disarmed.
3
The third level (the Servant's Quarters) is inhabited by various types of undead, mostly armored shadows and others. Same as the second floor, the key holder an enraged shadow beast has a small chance to spawn upon the death of any mob on the floor. There is a mirror here that is in the room with a bed and zombie maids that will take you to the outside. Monsters here are roughly 30th-43rd level. Most mobs on this level are not casters, so it can be an easier floor than the caster-dense level 2. This level can be confusing because of many long corridors and two-way illusory walls.
4
The fourth level (the Crypt) has mummies, oozes, and shadows. The entire floor is mazelike, and one can easily get lost down dead ends in it. If you fall down one of the many pit falls, click the lantern in the center of the bottom floor to be teleported back to the beginning of this floor. The exit to Iceclad is located behind a locked door just to the right of where you arrive on the floor, which can be opened with the Frosty key you used to teleport up here from 3. Unlike the 2nd and 3rd floor, the key dropper's spawn is triggered by a mob that spawns via a standard placeholder system: Amontehepna can spawn in the place of any mob on the floor. When Amontehepna is killed, the key dropper Cara Omica will spawn in a coffin at map marker 7 near the mirror to the next floor. She will agro all characters up to level 60 if standing within her agro radius. Narmak Berreka can spawn in place of any mob.
5
The fifth level (the Wedding) has many undead wedding participants that always appear in very specific spots. First, you are greeted by a six pack of (a golem usher). The way through then leads to the main room where the wedding party is being held. There are various smaller off shoot rooms and some upstairs mobs to be aware of, as they can aggro from above. The bride (Daman) and the groom (Nosja) spawn most of the notable loot on this level, and appear in one fixed place with the priest, straight out from where you enter the floor. The mirror to take you back outside is located right where you appear in the floor. The key to the sixth floor drops from an enraged relative which, like floors 2 and 3, can spawn upon the death of any mob on the floor.
Upper levels
Note on the following two level areas, some people refer to the top two areas as levels 6, 7, and 8. Others refer to them as level 6 (which has two areas) and a level 7. Be aware of this because when someone says level 6 or 8, you can be pretty sure of what they're talking about, but if they say level 7 clarify if they mean the final level or not. This guide will refer to them as 6A and 6B and 7.
6
The 6th floor is divided into two separate areas (A and B). There are two areas, separated by a mirror that doesn't require a key to use.
Upon entering the 6th floor you are in area 6A. Straight ahead will be a passage that forks in 3 directions; to the left is a side passage that leads to some liches in wall alcoves; straight ahead is a fire trap and another fork that leads to two large chambers filled with an ice shade and an icy shade liches. Looking over these large chambers full of liches are balconies that you can reach via the staircase to the right of the first fork. Don't get too near the edge of the balcony or you risk aggroing the liches below and chaining the entire room.
In several areas of 6A there are traps that can deal upwards of 800 fire damage if you trigger them. They can be more or less avoided by hugging the walls as you pass their locations. The locations that I can recall are straight out from the entrance fork, at the second fork; right of the first fork at the bend in the tunnel; one somewhere near a staircase (helpful, I know); and an ice trap with a dispel component at the dragon statue in the larger lich room with the exit mirror.
Like floor 4, this floor has a special mob that triggers the spawning of the key dropper VhalSera. On this floor in 6A it's a unique lich that uses the old world lich model. If you can get your peepers on it you'll know it's the right one on sight, but trackers can most easily identify it because it's the only lich that will summon a pet. Killing that unique lich will trigger the spawning of VhalSera in area 6B.
At the end, up a few staircases, past a buttload of shadow beasts, is the mirror to 6B. This mirror requires no key to use. If you or a group member accidentally clicks through, you can return to the entrance of 6A by clicking the mirror under the bridge in the first room of 6B. Common mobs in 6B are more shadow beasts, and the a shrouded bats which will spawn an enraged vampire immediately upon their death. Vampires are enchanters and can charm you, so be wary of that danger.
The key dropper, VhalSera, is an efreeti that spawns in 6B. So far I've had him spawn in at least 3 different locations, two in the first room of 6B and another in the second room just beyond the bridge. If he's in the latter spot, take note of the two a shrouded bats that path in and out of that room from the left; aggroing them will chain VhalSera even at level 60. The bats are animals and can be charmed, but if your pet dies midfight you'll have an enraged vampire add to deal with. VhalSera like Amontehepna and Cara Omica uses the spin stun and mana drain effects, and additionally can and will charm you if your magic resist is not up to snuff. At 60 I had no trouble landing magic spells or fire nukes, but some have reported he has high magic resist. Murder this djinni and get your key to the final floor. VhalSera will flee at ~10-15%
7
The 7th floor is the home of the most powerful monster in the Tower, Tserrina Syl'Tor (NPC). This area is much smaller than many of the other levels, and consists of essentially a long corridor, with a large spiral staircase inside that leads to another small area. In the area where you enter the spiral staircase room is a tapestry, which is a fake wall. Behind this wall is the area where Tserrina appears, randomly appearing after one of the bats in the area appear. The bats can trigger the spawn of Tserrina, and the way to tell which bats will spawn Tserrina is by checking if they see invis; if they do not see invis, they will not spawn Tserrina. Multiple see invis, Tserrina-spawning bats can be up at the same time. Tserrina is a moderately difficult creature to defeat. She can summon, charm, spin stun, and hit you with a debuff that drains both health and mana. She can do all of this to you at the same time and you will have to sit and watch, helpless, as you wither away.
There is one final 800 damage fire trap in the dungeon at the end of Tserrina's hallway.
Contrary to popular belief and the information that was previously on this page, Tserrina's Key is NOT a master key to all floors. The key can be used to teleport you from the left mirror on the first floor to the mirror room up on the 7th floor. It can also be used to teleport group members to the next floor (minus the key holder). Teleporting up to the mirror room does not grant you full access to the 7th floor, however, as there is a locked door immediately outside that requires the 6th floor's Large metal key to open.
The mirror room has 6 mirrors. From left to right as you enter the room, they take you to:
- Iceclad Ocean
- 2nd floor (with Crystal Key)
- 3rd floor (with Three Toothed Key)
- 4th floor (with Frosty Key)
- 5th floor (with Small rusty key)
- 6th floor (with Bone finger key)
